Yang, upgrading and the economy

Where yang comes from, what upgrading costs, how the blacksmith odds work, and what's worth spending on.

Yang comes from kills and from selling what you don't need. It leaves through one main door: upgrading.

Upgrading gear

Every equippable item can be upgraded from +0 upwards. Each level multiplies the item's base stats — so upgrading a good item beats upgrading a mediocre one, and the gap widens at every tier.

Each item's per-level success chance is listed on its own page — see any weapon in the Items database. Chances fall as the level rises, and the gold cost scales with both the item's base price and its current level.

Failure

By default a failed attempt destroys the item. This is the single most important thing to know before spending yang.

Some scrolls change that:

  • Chance scrolls add a flat percentage to the success roll.
  • Protective scrolls degrade the item by one level on failure instead of destroying it.

Read what a scroll does on its item page before you burn it. The two are not interchangeable, and the protective ones are worth far more than their drop rate suggests.

Equip level rises with upgrade

Upgrading raises an item's minimum equip level. An item you can wear at +0 may need several more character levels at +6. Check the requirement before you commit — a bricked-but-unequippable item is still a loss.

Bonus lines

Equipment can roll bonus stat lines on top of its base stats. A dropped item has a chance to arrive with lines already rolled; forge tools add or reroll them afterwards.

Adding lines gets harder as you go — the success chance for each additional line drops sharply, and the fifth line is the hardest of all. Items cap at five bonus lines.

What's worth spending on

Worth it:

  • Upgrading the best item you own in your weapon slot. Damage compounds.
  • Protective scrolls, before any high-level upgrade attempt.
  • Consumables that keep you alive in a zone you otherwise out-earn.

Not worth it, early:

  • Upgrading anything you'll replace in ten levels.
  • Chasing five bonus lines on levelling gear.
  • Founding a guild at level 20 for 100,000 yang when joining one costs nothing.

Reward bonuses

Gear can carry EXP, drop and yang bonuses. These are strong because they compound with everything else you do — but the combined bonus from equipment is soft-capped, so stacking nothing but drop-rate jewellery hits diminishing returns rather than scaling forever.
